endodontics FAQs

What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association that involves the treatment of the pulp (root canal) and surrounding tissues of the tooth. The pulp, located inside the root canal, consists of soft tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. Bacteria from tooth decay, periodontal disease, tooth fracture, or other issues can damage the pulp. An endodontist removes the diseased pulp to save the tooth and prevent further infection. After treatment, the tooth continues to function normally.

What is an Endodontist?

Endodontists are specialists who do 2-3 years of additional training beyond dental school in order to learn how to provide the highest quality, painless endodontic treatment to all patients. Endodontists are also trained to use specialized high tech equipment like operating microscopes and CBCT 3D imaging, which allows us to treat complex cases others are unable to perform.

I'm worried about x-rays. Should I be?

No need to worry. While x-rays are necessary during your treatment, we use an advanced non-film computerized system called digital radiography, which produces radiation levels up to 90% lower than conventional dental x-rays. These digital images can be optimized, archived, printed, and sent to your general dentist or another specialist via email or CD-ROM.

What about infection?

We adhere to the highest standards of infection control as advocated by OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Dental Association. We use autoclave sterilization and barrier techniques to eliminate any risk of infection.

What happens after treatment?

After your root canal therapy is completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks. Your restorative dentist will decide on the necessary restoration to protect your tooth. Complications are rare, but we are available at all times to respond if any issues arise.
